Linux Setup

How we setup Linux using Suse Linux 7.2

We install Linux using the default system plus Samba (a networking system), and Dosemu ( the Dos emulator). The Samba system requires a network interface card and is used if you have Windows_9x for point of sale stations. We prefer to use smart/dumb terminals for point of sale as they are just screen and keyboard with no big hard drive box to take up space and overheat under the sales counter. The terminal we use is a dorio vgb10 from boundless technoligy. We run the in the "scoansi" emulation mode.

The Dos emulator we use is modified to print receipts from printers attached to the back of the point of sale terminals and to pop open the cash drawer. These changes are in the emulator module "int10.c" and are available to anyone who wants them free of charge. Just give us a call.

When we finish the setup you have a Linux server which can support a number of point of sale work stations. The thing we like about Linux is that it is very solid and we don't get a lot of network trouble calls like we do with Windows networking. Also it is much less expensive because the point of sale terminals are less expensive than point of sale computers.

With this system you have internet access, e_mail, word processing and all of the orher things you would have with a Windows system. It is different than Windows, but very easy to learn. If you can type in a user name, a password, and ./golf , you can run our system under Linux!
